Reading skills are tremendously important in the academic, professional, and social futures of our children. In order to maintain the growth made this school year, to better prepare for the upcoming school year, and to cultivate a love of reading, all lower school students will participate in the following reading program.

Over the summer, students in grades 1-5 should read daily along with the required book selected by the teacher. They will also be required to complete a School Zone grammar workbook, which can be purchased from Amazon. This is a required assignment and will be given a grade.

This summer reading program is required for all students who have completed grades K-4 and is also required to earn the end-of-the-year Reading Award. Reflections on summer reading will be part of the classroom activities during the first week of school.

Rising kindergarten students will be required to participate in a guided reading program that includes five books at the emergent level of reading. Please make a list of the books you read with your child and include the author and title of each book. The list will be due on the first day of school and must be signed by a parent. Completing this assignment by kindergarten students earns them a Certificate of Accomplishment.

Rising first grade students should read each day over the course of the summer. The required reading is Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell. The required workbook is School Zone-Kindergarten Basics by School Zone, Joan Hoffman. The rising first grade will only have ONE workbook, which is a combination of math and language arts skills.
